SDI — subsurface drip irrigation — puts the water into the soil, straight into the root zone, with no sprinklers. Nothing stands proud for the mower to catch, nothing blows away in the wind, and nothing is lost to evaporation — up to 70% less water, and nothing to see.

The water does not end up in the air.
With a conventional sprinkler system, some of the water evaporates or blows away before it reaches the roots. A subsurface system needs considerably less water for the same result — and nothing technical is visible on the surface of the garden at all.
directly The drip line is laid in the soil at the height of the root zone. The water does not run across the surface; it arrives exactly where the plant takes it up — at low flow, evenly.
evaporation Because the water goes below ground, the sun and the wind never reach it. Nothing evaporates and nothing drifts — so the garden can be kept as green on up to 70% less water than with sprinklers.
invisible No head standing proud for the mower to catch, for children to kick or for frost to destroy. Nothing shows above the lawn — the garden reads as one surface, and the system is protected from damage.
a drier surface Because the surface of the soil stays dry, weed seed germinates less readily and the risk of fungal disease drops. The moisture is where it is wanted: at the roots, not on the leaves.
built in Nutrient solution can be metered into the root zone through the same system, in precise doses. The plant gets exactly what it needs — less fertiliser, better growth, a measurable difference in quality.
reliability Low-flow emitters are sensitive to blockage, so we build in both a filter and a pressure regulator. Clean water at the right pressure is the basis of trouble-free running in the long term.

The sprinkler route
The water arrives from above, through the air. Some of it evaporates or blows away, and what is left wets the surface too — where it suits the weeds and the fungal diseases.

The laying depth, the emitter spacing and the zoning all have to be matched to the soil type, how freely it drains and what is planted in it — that is the only way the moisture spreads evenly through the whole root zone.
This line runs under the mulch. With SDI it runs under the lawn.

Subsurface irrigation does exactly the same thing, except the line goes into the soil under the lawn — nothing shows on the surface, and evaporation drops out of the equation.

Where the water and the look both matter.
lawns Where an unbroken, immaculate lawn is the point — in a family garden or on company grounds. No head standing proud to interrupt the surface, and mowing cannot damage the system.
row crops Orchards, vines, vegetable plots — wherever the planting stands in rows, subsurface drip is ideal. Water and nutrients go straight to the stem, with outstanding efficiency.
exposed sites On a slope, surface watering runs off; in the wind, sprinkler water drifts. An underground system rules out both: the water stays put and seeps in exactly where it was meant to.
existing system Not everything has to be replaced. An existing sprinkler system can be extended with subsurface circuits where they pay off most — in beds, along hedging, and in strips that are awkward to water.

What does subsurface irrigation cost?
The price depends on the size of the area, the soil type, the emitter spacing and the number of zones — together these decide how much line and what filtration are needed. After the free site survey you get a specific, itemised quote.

01 Is 70% water saving really achievable?
With evaporation and drift taken out, subsurface irrigation is the most efficient option there is, and compared with watering by hand or with sprinklers a substantial saving — up to 70% — is achievable. The exact figure depends on the soil, the planting and the climate; we go through it realistically at the survey.
02 How deep does the line go, and will it block?
We match the laying depth to the soil and the planting, so the moisture reaches the roots evenly. Against blockage we build in a filter and a pressure regulator, and the emitters are a root-barrier type. Flushed regularly, the system runs for years without trouble.
03 Can it go into an existing lawn?
Yes, although laying it before the lawn is formed is much the gentler option. It can go into an established lawn too: we lift the turf and put it back in layers, and the run heals over within a few weeks. At the survey we look at which method suits your garden best.
04 Can it be used for feeding as well as watering?
Yes. Nutrient solution can be metered into the root zone through the same system in precise doses — which makes a measurable difference to growth and quality, particularly in orchards and with demanding planting. The fertigation unit is built in when the system is designed.
05 What happens to the system in winter?
In autumn we drain the system so frost cannot damage the line and the emitters, and in spring we start it up again and flush it through. We can do that for you — it can be part of the maintenance package.
06 Is there a warranty on the work?
Yes. Because both the design and the installation are ours, we warrant the whole system, and we stay reachable after commissioning — from the filtration to the seasonal servicing. The specific conditions are set out in the quote.
